Anyone can be a canna-cook
CANNABUTTER RECIPE FOR AT-HOME EDIBLES
Let me guess. You got some fancy new kitchen equipment for Christmas, and now, your New Year’s resolution is to cook more for yourself and stop ordering take out too much. Yes? Fantastic! Get that air fryer out the box, unwrap that Kitchen Aid, sharpen those new knives. It’s time to bake.
Cooking and baking with cannabis can seem daunting at first. Especially if you aren’t very familiar with cooking and baking to begin with. But fear not! Nobody’s asking you to make a 12-course tasting menu or a dozen souffles (but if you can do that by any chance, DM us). Making edibles at home can be fun and easy and there’s a great place to start: cannabutter.
Cannabutter is just that, cannabis-infused butter. It is a great starting point for cannabis cooks because it’s easy to make and has dozens of uses. Here’s what you need:
- 1 cup of butter
- 1 cup cannabis
- A can-do attitude
If you don’t have homemade can-do, store-bought is fine.
IMPORTANT PREP WORK: DECARBING
When cooking with cannabis, you need to decarboxylate it, or “decarb” it. It sounds serious but all it means is that you pre-cook the cannabis to activate its psychoactive properties. When you smoke cannabis, this is typically done quickly when you heat it up with a flame. But, cooking it is a slightly different process.
To decarb cannabis, start with buds placed on a baking sheet. Put them in a pre-heated 245 degree oven for about 40 minutes. The key here is low-and-slow cooking. Rotate the cannabis every 10 minutes or so for even cooking.
Now that you’ve decarbed your cannabis, you can start making your cannabutter. Here’s how:
- Grind up 10 grams of your decarbed cannabis.
- In a medium pot, melt 1 cup of butter with 1 cup of water over medium heat. – Most recipes I’ve seen don’t add water, I’m not an expert, but I feel like this would make it easier to spread on things but harder to add to baking recipes.
- Once the butter is melted, add your cannabis grounds to the mix and stir.
- Simmer the mixture for about 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally. Don’t let the mixture come to a boil. You can even do this step in a crock pot on low heat.
- Strain the mixture through a fine sieve or cheesecloth to separate the infused butter from the grounds.
- Refrigerate the butter overnight to allow it to solidify.
USES
The best thing about cannabutter is its versatility. You can use it anywhere you’d use regular butter. Schmear it on a bagel, fry an egg with it, throw it in a batter or baked goods. However, something to note, when you make cannabutter at home, you have less control over its THC content. So, it’s important to test your cannabutter in small amounts (perhaps spread over a piece of toast or a cracker) to get a feel for its potency. Remember: the key to edibles is patience. You can always add more, but you can’t take it back.
